Freedom to be Yourself
Revision of "The Myth of a Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Names Maria"
All throughout her childhood and into adulthood, she often heard about how other people reacted towards Latin American women, men included, sometimes very rudely. Cofer writes about the mixed cultural signals that have certain stereotypes, such as:The Hispanic women as the sexual firebrand. Cofer also expresses in her writings about an impact on culturally different people who look down on Latin Americans.
Talking about her childhood, trying to make a point about how she was taught to act by other women around her, She told of her cultural background. Personal experiences was the last thing she spoke about, dealing with accusations she made about disrespectful people to Latin American women.
More often than not, men look at women sexually, Latin American women wear provocative clothing because of cultural wants, those women are often looked as ladies of the night or "scandless". Women are usually looked upon as lower class citizens and that just isn't true,in history women have made many contributions to our country. Sometimes people don't think before they speak and they "judge a book by it's cover". During the discussion with the older Puerto Rican woman, I learned that if a man "wronged" a girl everyone would fight for her family honor, I feel that is the way all cultures should be.
