Mother's Interpretation

The story of "Mother Tongue" was not only interesting by touching. The respect that Amy Tan revealed to her mother by writing her fiction books in her language she grew up with was the epitome of respect. It is amazing how Amy did not ever notice during one of her lengthy speeches that her English was different until her mother was present at one of them. This was a reality check for Amy Tan and this made her aware of her mothers "broken" speech even more. Although, Amy had set backs as a child because of her mother's speech, in the long run it has been a schoolmaster for her to learn by. Amy received her mother's approval by the words "so easy to read" she knew then that she was a success.

What is Winning?

"The Lottery," and "The Storm." are two very different stories. Family seems to be the comparison between the two. There were similarities, like the struggles that each family endured. The lottery was about a dark day in a sense and the storm was about a dark, rainy day literally. In the story "The Lottery"; the destruction of a family by stoning and there was no one that could change it, while the story of "The Storm"; Calixta was left alone with an ex lover and chose to be faithful, after the storm it is calm and sunny, as Calixta from the choice she made. When left to our own devices, sometimes we don't make the best decisions. Calixta was able to fight lust. The annual traditional drawing of a persons name to be stoned by all is incomprehensible, this is not a lucky draw. Both of these stories are very much alike in a sense, "The Storm" is somewhat like the lottery and visa versa.

Alice: The Meaning of Inner Beauty

Revision of "Beauty: When The Other Dancer is the Self Alice Walker had a lot change for her in just a few moments. When Alice was young, she had confidence in herself. Alice had a whole new outlook on herself after the BB accident. Before, she was smart and beautiful, but now she didn't see herself as either of those things. Her eye was ugly, meaning she was ugly. Now that she thought she was ugly, she had others believing it too. She was so ashamed of her eye, she did not raise her head for six years. After the tissue was removed, it was like her life resumed; she got the boyfriend, friends, and was valedictorian. As life went on, she still struggled with the thought of her eye still being slightly different than the other. I think after having her daughter tell her that, "There's a world in your eye," she had a new outlook on it. She now could love it because the one opinion she worried about the most accepted it. Alice Walker had the other dancer who was beautiful, whole, free, and who was also Alice. Posted by EngDeath2Me at 7:37 PM Email This BlogThis! Share to Twitter Share to Facebook

Randolph County Drought

The local drought issue seems to be the "talk of the town", some local farmers mentioned that the last drought was over 50 years ago. This is a widespread problem that is putting farmers as well as livestock in a terrible position.
The crop producers face serious economic loses from reduced or non-existent crops, the lack of corn, soybean and hay crops could make the fallout for milk, beef, pork, chicken, and egg producers.
The farmers will be the ones bearing the brunt of the financial losses, but the loss of animal industry will be enormous over the next year. This will ensure higher feed prices, which will inhibit the livestock to produce properly, this could cause livestock producers to liquidate immediately.
Farmers will loose many crops because there just isn't enough rain and they pump water as much as possible from their wells but that too can run out if not managed properly. The local farmers markets have very little vegetables and fruits to sell as well as the local nursery owners who exclaim the water runs none stop from dusk to dawn. This makes it hard to make any profit when your water bill is so high and then the owners have to increase the prices just to survive. When there is a crises such as the drought it doesn't only affect the business owners but this issue bleeds over into our everyday life as well.

Freedom to be Yourself

Revision of "The Myth of a Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Names Maria" All throughout her childhood and into adulthood, she often heard about how other people reacted towards Latin American women, men included, sometimes very rudely. Cofer writes about the mixed cultural signals that have certain stereotypes, such as:The Hispanic women as the sexual firebrand. Cofer also expresses in her writings about an impact on culturally different people who look down on Latin Americans. Talking about her childhood, trying to make a point about how she was taught to act by other women around her, She told of her cultural background. Personal experiences was the last thing she spoke about, dealing with accusations she made about disrespectful people to Latin American women. More often than not, men look at women sexually, Latin American women wear provocative clothing because of cultural wants, those women are often looked as ladies of the night or "scandless". Women are usually looked upon as lower class citizens and that just isn't true,in history women have made many contributions to our country. Sometimes people don't think before they speak and they "judge a book by it's cover". During the discussion with the older Puerto Rican woman, I learned that if a man "wronged" a girl everyone would fight for her family honor, I feel that is the way all cultures should be.

Obama Care; The American Control

Revision of Obama Care "The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act" also known as Obama Care, is a healthcare plan to provide healthcare insurance to many unisured americans who can't afford insurance. This plan will incur penalties on many uninsured americans such as: small businesses, younger workers who don't feel insurance is necessary, and ones who choose not to purchase insurance or can't afford it. There are only a couple of positive's about this law, A family plan can keep children living at home under the age of 26 on their insurance plan, but some American families don't have a family insurance plan. Insurance providers' can't drop you because you have a pre-exiting conditions, this requires insurance companies to cover all applicants. There will also be rates according to health status or gender. I feel this act is a "BIG NEGATIVE" for our nation. How will the people come up with the money to pay for this government plan? The fines that the americans will be required to pay is going to devastate many families.  Many small businesses may close because they can't afford to provide insurance to employees, which will cause the unemployment rate in america to go up again!! I have been employed by the government for the past four years and thank GOD I have good insurance on my family, but my husband and I have been married for nearly 29 years and have raised 3 children with "NO INSURANCE" because we could not afford it. We were very blessed that our children we very healthy and never had to be put in the hospital for any reason. My husband is self-employed and will have to carry insurance on his employees, this could devastate his small business. I am against this act because I feel it is just one more way to "control" Americans, and the 5th amendment is being shaken!!

The Heart of an American

Revision of The Struggle to Be An All American Girl All Wong wanted growing up was to be an average American girl, no matter how hard her mother tried to force her to learn about her Chinese culture. Going to school every afternoon to learn about the Chinese culture wasn't something Wong enjoyed. Wong disliked everything about her own culture: the smells, the sound, and the looks of it all. Wong was embarrassed of her background. Wong wanted more in life than her Chinese culture could give her. She didn't care to learn the language or anything related to her heritage. Wong was eventually granted a cultural divorce. She could finally be that American girl she dreamed about. She still thought of herself as multicultural. She was an American girl at heart, but still chinese on the outside. No matter what, she will always be part chinese.
